Install Custom ROM on Samsung Galaxy J2 / Upgrade to higher Android version & unlock a new OneUI Experience

Often phone companies donot want you to have the best experience with your smartphones. Hence, they donot provide software updates after sometime and prevent users from having basic features even though the hardware supports it. In such cases, the only option users have is to install and use custom ROMs. 

Warning : Installing custom ROMs can be risky. One wrong step can turn your phones into costly paper weights. Try at your own risk.

Note: However, what is life without some risk and adventure! Be an adventurer, donot be a fool. Try only after the warranty of your phones have expired otherwise, you may void your warranty.


In this blog, the main discussion is about Samsung Galaxy J2(2015) Model: SM-J200G, although the steps for installing any custom ROM is similar for all android phones.

Samsung Galaxy J2 Specifications:
RAM : 1GB
Storage: 8GB
UI : TouchWiz UI

 
Samsung hasnot provided any android version update to it. So, it was forced to be stuck with Android 5 Lollipop. But no longer. It is time to break the chains.


Warning 2: Do at your own risk. Whatever you do with your devices after reading this blog, that will be your own responsibility. Donot blame me, if anything goes wrong.

This ROM may work for Samsung Galaxy J2 2015 SM-J200F/G/H or Samsung J2lte or other devices too.

But it has been tested by me specifically for SM-J200G.

Things and Tools you will need: No Root Method
1. A Samsung J2 Phone (Obviously)
2. A PC (You can do it without a PC too but that would require another phone with OTG capability. Here, the method using PC is discussed.)
3. TWRP (Version Compatible for your J2 device. Usually,  the one for J2lte will work too.)
4. Odin (Just to install Twrp in the phone.)
5. The Custom ROM ( Here,the Nextgen OS ROM is used. It will give you OneUI  experience.)
6. An USB Cable ( And an OTG Connector, if you want to do it using a phone.)
7. Samsung developer driver (Optional. Only when your device doesnot connct with your PC)

This ROM is based on Android 7.1.1

Steps:

1. Factory Reset your J2
You can do without it but remove any locks for safety.

2. Enable developer option on your phone
Go to 'About Phone' in the Settings then click the 'Build Number' a few times to enable the developer option.
  
3. In the 'Developer Options', enable the USB debugging and OEM unlock options.

4. Extract Odin  on PC.  Open Odin.exe .

5. Connect your PC and Phone with USB cable. It should show 'Added!' on Odin.( Otherwise, install Samsung developer drivers then repeat the step)

6. Go to 'Options' on Odin and unclick 'Auto Restart'.

7. Click on AP then select the TWRP.tar file from PC and the click install/apply.

8. Now Press Volumn UP + Home + Power Button simultaneously. It will open recovery option. You should see the TWRP, if everything works.

9. Take a Backup of your stock ROM and partitions and save in SD card or PC. If anything goes wrong , you can install your stock ROM again. (If you take backup in internal storage then transfer that to a PC or Sdcard or USB.)

10. Wipe your partitions (Wipe dalvik cache, cache, data, system). DONOT Reboot. Go Back.

11. Now copy and save the Custom ROM (NextGenOS.zip) to internal storage or SDcard.

12. Click 'Install' in TWRP and select the ROM.zip file. (You can select the bootlogo.zip file too for different boot logo)

13. Then Flash it. Wait for it to complete

14. You will enter the Aroma installer.

15. Accept Terms and Conditions and read change logs.

16. You can select the apps that you want to remove. (Pro Tip: For best experience Remove bloatwares like BixyHome, Sbike Mode, Google Search, Edge panel, AlwaysOnDisplay, Game Utility)

17. Select your Country Code(If cannot find it, select UK) 

18. A menu to select BACKUP EFS, SAFE FORMAT OR HARD FORMAT will appear. Select as per your need. (Pro Tip: Click on NEXT GEN LITE VERSION if want to install only neccessary only essential apps )

19. Wait for installation to complete.

20. The first reboot will take 15-20 minutes. Ensure your phone has atleast 80% charge. (Pro Tip: Wait for atleast 40 minutes. If it doesnot work, go to step 12 and follow all steps again)
 

Reboot and Enjoy!!!

(Pro Tip: Remove/Disable some more bloatwares after installing ROM for better experience)

Bugs in the ROM:

Every custom ROM has bugs and this one has too.


(Pro Tip: The default camera app is really bad. Find a better one on https://f-droid.org/ )

1. Front camera doesnnot work(Only in some Variants!)  

2. The 'About Phone' in the Settings will crash the settings after clicking it 1or 2 times. 

(Pro Tip: You can bypass this crashing by using search option in settings app)

3. Some areas of UI doesot appear properly on using the BlackUI.apk theme.

4. The developer has forced a folder called 'Trailer' in the files which cannot be deleted.

5. Changing 'Image  Size option' in the Chat Setting in the Messages App will crash it.

6. Cannot record videos in default Camera app. 

7. Night light feature is not adjustable.

8. Themes randomly crash 

9. Notification Panel looks different first few times. Reboot 2-3 times then it will work. 

10. In device maintenance under performance mode >> optimised settings, screen resolution used to be HD. On clicking on it,in the next window there will be no option to change. On clicking apply, it  changes it to FHD and there is no way to change it back.
