Texas shooting re-lit the debate over access to guns in US

The horrific shooting incident in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 21 (including 19 children), has re-lit the debate over access to firearms in the US. But despite a high rate of gun-led incidents, the country has witnessed the division of officials in two over the same, resulting in no-concrete actions being taken.

In light of the Texas incident, pressure has been increased on officials across the US to take stringent steps over fire-arms control, ensuring the safety of all, especially those of innocent school children.

The latest gruesome incident in Texas just got added to with devastating mass school shooting incidents reported in the US. According to the US-based newspaper, Education Week, 27 school shooting incidents have been reported solely in the year 2022. Further, according to the Gun Violence Archive, an independent data that collects data regarding gun violence , 212 shootings incidents have been reported in 2022.

In yet another horrific shooting incident in the US, an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 school children and two adults at a primary school in Uvalde, Texas.  An 18-year-old gunman, Salvador Ramos, identified as the resident of Uvalde, armed with AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines, reportedly open-fired at Robb Elementary School in what is the deadliest school shooting incident reported in a decade after a 2012 horrific attack at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. The incident claimed 26 lives then.

The shooting began at 11:32 local time on Tuesday, and the attacker ‘did act alone during this heinous crime’, media reports quoted Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Chief of Police Pete Arredondo as saying. After the ensuing 40-minute (approx.) encounter, the gunman was killed by a law enforcement agent.

Hours later the incident, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, addressing the press conference, further shared some chilling details regarding the horrific incident. He added that the gunman shot his grandmother in the face before targeting the school and has posted the same on his Facebook.

Secondly, in yet another chilling detail, the Texas Governor added that, prior to the incident, i.e. approximately 15 minutes before the incident, the gunman posted a message on Facebook saying, “he was going to open fire at an elementary school.”

President Biden condemns Texas school shooting incident

Condemning the incident, President Biden said, “Tonight, there are parents who will never see their child again. Parents who will never be the same. To lose a child is to have a piece of your soul ripped away forever. I ask the nation to pray for them-to give them strength in the darkness.”

Citing the three-fold increase in the shooting incident, ever since the assault weapon ban ended, President Biden said, “I spent my career as a senator and as Vice President working to pass commonsense gun laws. We can’t and won’t prevent every tragedy. But we know they work and have a positive impact. When we passed the assault weapon ban, mass shootings went down. When the law expired, mass shootings tripled.”

In his remarks to the nation over the horrific incident, the visibly shaken and distraught head of the United States re-affirmed his commitment to sort of concrete response towards the flawed gun law in US. “It’s time- for those who obstruct or delay or block the commonsense gun laws, we need to let you know that we will not forget,” he added.

Meanwhile, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell too condemned the horrific incident that happened in Uvalde, Texas, that resulted in the untimely demise of nineteen school children along with others.

“Once again, children have been attacked and killed while attending school, the one place outside of their homes where they should be safest. This time it happened in Uvalde, Texas,” Russell said.
