One of the country’s first female scientists, Anna Mani is the epitome of the phrase, “Try and try until you succeed”. Popularly known as the ‘Weather Woman of India’ her work and research made it possible for India to make accurate weather forecasts and laid the groundwork for the nations to harness renewable energy. Due to her foundational contribution, today India is able to minimize the impacts of damages caused by weather change.
Early days

An avid reader, by age 12, she had read almost all the books at her public library. After high school, she did her intermediate science course at Women’s Christian College (WCC). Then on, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in Physics and Chemistry from Presidency College, Madras. After her graduation studies, for a year, she started teaching at WCC. She also won a scholarship for post graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore.
In IISc, Bangalore, under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman, between 1942 and 1945, she published five papers, completed her PhD and began a graduate program at Imperial College, London. It was here at Imperial College that she learned to specialize in meteorological instrumentation.
