Interacting exclusively with PBNS, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy said, βDRDO is working in a big way in the drones related technology with many industries, and a lot of startups and MSMEs are working with defence R&D. We are encouraging and transferring a lot of technologies to startups and other industries.
If you look at βAnti-Drone technologyβ, the technology has been transferred to multiple private industries and also to the public sector. We are one of the few countries to develop this technology in the beginning. The Anti-drones technology has been deployed in various functions in Delhi, whether it is Republic Day, or Independence Day among other events, Dr Reddy asserted.
DRDOβs Drones Dominance
Talking about DRDO collaboration with various startups, Dr Reddy said there are a number of startups that are working with DRDO in various drone technology development, whether it is for surveillance applications, long-endurance, or high-altitude applications along with various defence applications.
We have worked with many industries that have come out and who are producing equipment for our Armed Forces. Further, we are continuously working on new technologies which require different types of batteries, motors, navigation technology, and many other things which are required for drones manufacturing, he added.
He further mentioned transferring these technologies to the industries and encouraging them through our βTechnology Development Fundingβ is enabling various industries for developing varieties of drones today, Chairman DRDO said.
When asked about the liberalised Drone Rules, 2021, which removed various restrictions including hefty paperwork and permissions, Dr Reddy said the push that has been given by Prime Minister with his vision that India should become a drone hub. I think that has given the necessary momentum to the entire nation. A lot of policies have been brought which are encouraging the industry to come, further various entities have shown a lot of interest. I am sure India will be leading the world in the coming years as a Drone hub and supply it to the entire world, he added.
On DRDOβs exports, Dr Reddy said, There have been a lot of enquires on various systems that we have developed from Missiles to Torpedo to Radars to Sonars among others. Various countries have shown interest and we are in touch with them and trying to see that our products are sold to them.
As you see there is a sea-change in the few years, and indigenously developed technologies have attracted many countries, it will surely give a boost to defence sector, DRDO Chairman said.
Drones are revolutionizing the course of our living, whether it is day-to-day agricultural activities, land ownership in villages, or the security of sensitive areas. With liberalized regulation coupled with a highly innovative talent pool, today drones are put to use for sensitive border surveillance, security, and terrorism-related challenges.
