World Asthma Day 2021: With the right treatment and right care, Asthma can be controlled
Every year World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma to raise awareness about asthma and its management in the world. It is celebrated on the first Tuesday of May. On this day, many activities are done around the world to motivate asthma patients to keep their asthma under control.
2021 Theme: "Uncovering the misconceptions of asthma"
In view of the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Global Initiative for Asthma appealed to people suffering from the disease to wash their hands well, maintain proper social distance, and continue with asthma medicines prescribed by their doctor. The theme of this year's World Asthma Day is to "uncover the misconceptions of asthma". Some common misconceptions relating to asthma are:
• Asthma is a childhood disease; As age increases, people will come out of it.
• Asthma is contagious.
• Asthma sufferers should not exercise.
• Asthma can only be controlled with a heavy dose of steroids.
Viral infections and migraines act as triggers for asthma
Shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and cough are symptoms of asthma. During an asthma attack, the lining of the airways swells, causing the airways to narrow, and thus the airflow through and out of the lungs.
The exact cause of asthma is not fully known. Common risk factors include house dust, bed mite, carpet, pollution and pet dander, new pollen and mold or tobacco smoke, and chemical irritants in the workplace. Viral infections, cold air, extreme emotional stimuli such as anger or fear, and migraines can act as triggers for asthma.
235 million people globally suffer from asthma in 2020
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 235 million people were suffering from asthma in 2020 and it is one of the major non-communicable diseases. It is the most common disease in children. Asthma cannot be cured, but if it is managed with the right treatment at the right time, it can be controlled to prevent an asthma attack or reduce the number of asthma patients.
Exercise: an antidote for asthma
Regular exercise can help reduce asthma symptoms. Exercise is as important for someone with asthma as it is for someone without asthma.
Special inhalers or daily medication can be taken for the treatment of asthma. In addition, the patient should avoid going to areas filled with smoke or dirt.
By spreading awareness regarding the factors that amplify the chances of contracting asthma, one can enable people to effectively control it. With proper management of asthma, one can lead a successful and active life.
